Research

One of the main pillars of the Institute of Geography is research activity, which is documented by publications in international scientific journals; participation in international scientific conferences; management of international and domestic research projects; and collaboration with several foreign partners.

Research at the Institute of Geography has three basic directions: Physical Geography, Human and Regional Geography, Geoinformatics and Remote Sensing.

In the field of Geoinformatics and Remote Sensing, scientific research is focused on geomorphometry, the use of laser scanning and unmanned aerial systems in landscape research, modeling of solar radiation and surface temperature in the city, and modeling of surface water flow in the landscape. We have participated in the development of several tools that are implemented in open-source geographic information systems (GRASS GIS).

Physical Geography research is focused on karst landscape, flysch zone, and fluvial geomorphology. Traditionally we maintain our focus on cave mapping. Mineralogical and sedimentological research is concentrated on heavy mineral problematics.

In the field of Human Geography, it is mainly population research, migration research, and the research of economic transformation of the regions.

Didactics of Geography deals mainly with new methods of teaching Geography at primary and secondary schools, including interactive forms of teaching using the most modern information technologies.
